Taking New Year’s Intention Setting Beyond January First

Happy New Year! The start of a new year calls us to recenter, set goals, and establish new habits. Yet, coming off the holiday chaos, finding the motivation to make changes or dive into new projects can be challenging. Let's explore why spending more than a day crafting your intentions and goals can help make them stick.

Deep Reflection: Looking back on the past year helps us see what went well and what didn't. Taking an honest look at what you want to bring into the coming year and what you want to let go of will bring positive change. This process of reflection often takes more time than one day allows, and following a reflective framework that lasts days or weeks can help to facilitate clarity. This framework could include guided reflection questions, time to outline steps to reaching your goals, and ample space to process the highs and lows of the year behind you.

Smart Goal Setting: Setting smart goals takes time and care. By creating a clear focus for your year, and breaking down your goals into bite-sized pieces, you can make a roadmap for the year. This thoughtful approach not only helps you grow personally but also ensures you will stick with your goal and be more successful at reaching it. By taking more than just a day to shape your plan, you can be sure that the goals you have selected are the right ones, and you have a clear path to reach them.

Sharing and Support: Talking through your new year’s intentions or goals with family and friends can create fruitful conversation and even inspire you to adjust your direction. On top of getting great insight, doing this will recruit cheerleaders to your team. Later in the year, they will be on your side, primed to give you a boost when things get tough. Sharing your dreams with others is a crucial part of the process that can’t be rushed, so taking time in January to reflect in community can help you to create meaningful resolutions and goals.
